My Look Back at Overwatch 2's May 29 Stadium Balance Patch

Overwatch 2 Stadium’s May 29, 2025 hotfix reshaped Freja, Ashe, and more with impactful buffs, nerfs, and bug fixes.

Even in 2026, I still remember the May 29, 2025 Overwatch 2 hotfix as the moment Stadium stopped feeling like a chaotic experiment and started feeling like a real competitive mode. I had been grinding Stadium builds since Season 16 launched, and this patch hit like a meteor. It nerfed Freja, buffed Ashe and Junker Queen, and tinkered with dozens of hero items and powers. If you missed it or you're revisiting the patch history, here's my first-person breakdown of everything that changed.

The Big Picture

Stadium is not Quick Play. It is not Competitive. It is a strange, wonderful sandbox where heroes get powers and items that completely rewrite their kits. Because of that, balance patches in Stadium always feel more dramatic to me than regular hero tuning. A single item buff can turn a forgotten build into an unstoppable monster. A single power nerf can erase a playstyle overnight.

This May 29 update was no exception. Blizzard rolled out buffs, nerfs, and bug fixes across Ashe, Freja, Mei, Soldier 76, D.Va, Junker Queen, Orisa, Reinhardt, Ana, Juno, and Kiriko. I spent the next week testing every change I could, and here is what stood out.

Ashe: Finally Getting Some Oomph

Ashe has always been one of my comfort picks in Stadium, but she often felt like she was one item short of true carry potential. This patch gave her exactly what I wanted.

Change Type Before After
Molten Munitions Power 50 damage 80 damage
Sidewinder Epic Weapon Hero Item 10% attack speed, 15% damage 15% attack speed, 25% damage

Blizzard noted that Ashe was climbing in competitiveness but still missing that extra punch. I agree. Molten Munitions now hits noticeably harder, even though the tooltip was temporarily wrong. The developer comment said the tooltip would be fixed next season, and functionally it was set to 80. Sidewinder also became a much more attractive pick for weapon-focused builds. I started pairing it with Reload Therapy and Out with a Bang, and the results felt smoother than before.

Freja: The New DPS Gets Reined In

Freja arrived in the previous update, and she immediately felt oppressive in Stadium. Her mobility and burst damage made her a nightmare in the right hands. So when I saw the May 29 hotfix, I was not surprised.

  • Lille Fælde was re-enabled, but its Bola slow was decreased by 60%.

  • Bola no longer pulls enemies on direct hit.

  • So Cooked had its damaging zone damage reduced to 30% (down from 50%) and its duration reduced to 2 seconds (down from 3 seconds).

  • Deep Pockets, Forager, Portable Zipline, Volley a Deux, and Magnetic Maelstrom were all adjusted.

That Bola pull removal was huge. I used to watch Freja players yank enemies out of position with almost no counterplay. After this patch, she still had strong tools, but she could not just delete a backline with one lucky direct hit. The So Cooked nerf also made her area denial less suffocating. I still think Freja is strong in 2026, but this was the first time she felt fair in Stadium.

Mei: More Survivable, More Annoying

Mei's Blizznado power received a change aimed at improving her survivability when Cryo-Freeze is unavailable. The developer comment explained that the goal was to improve synergy with Blizzard effects. In practice, I found that Mei could sustain herself better during her ultimate or mini-Blizzard, which made her much harder to push out of a fight.

I played a few matches with a Blizzard-focused build, and the difference was real. I could hold a choke point longer, absorb more pressure, and keep my team alive while they rotated. It was not a massive rework, but it made Mei feel more like the defensive anchor she is supposed to be.

Soldier 76: Biotic Field Builds Get Firepower

Soldier 76 received several adjustments, and the developer comments were refreshingly honest. Biotic Field builds had been unpopular and underperforming, so Blizzard added more firepower. Chaingun was also very prevalent in Weapon Power builds, so it was tuned down to encourage variety.

  • Hunker Down – Power

  • Chaingun – Power

  • Battery Pack – Rare Ability Hero Item

  • Rapid Response Radius – Epic Ability Hero Item

  • Compression Fatigues – Rare Survival Hero Item

  • Removed 5% Attack Speed

  • Added 5% Ability Power

I had been ignoring Biotic Field builds because they felt like a waste of items. After this patch, I gave them another shot. The extra Ability Power on Compression Fatigues made my healing station feel more impactful, and I could actually contribute damage while staying in the fight. Chaingun nerfs were noticeable, but I appreciated that Blizzard wanted more variety instead of one dominant weapon build.

D.Va: Creating Threatening Zones

D.Va has always struggled to assert space in Stadium, especially when enemies just run circles around her. This patch buffed her Lava effects and adjusted Focused Fusion.

  • Focused Fusion – Power

  • Ignition Burst – Power

  • Vesuvius Protocol – Rare Ability Hero Item

The developer comment made me laugh: they did not want D.Va to bring a sniper rifle to a knife fight, but they still wanted her to hit enemies from near and far. After testing, I felt that her zoning improved. Enemies were less willing to walk into my turf, and Focused Fusion felt less clunky when tracking fast targets.

Junker Queen: Love for Shotgun and Knife

Junker Queen's axe has been doing most of the heavy lifting for a long time. This patch finally gave her shotgun and knife some attention.

Change Type Before After
Royal Bullets Power 12m range, 30 damage 15m range, 50 damage
Blade Parade Power 35% damage 100% damage
Merciless Magnetism Power 12m range 15m range
Thick Skull Epic Survival Hero Item 50% damage reduction 75% damage reduction

I loved this. Royal Bullets suddenly felt like a real ranged threat, and Blade Parade became terrifying in the right hands. Thick Skull also gave me more staying power against burst damage, which is exactly what Junker Queen needs when she dives into a fight. I started seeing more varied Junker Queen builds after this patch, and that was a win.

Orisa, Reinhardt, Ana, Juno, and Kiriko

Orisa's Scorched Earth and Electro Lights were buffed to help her Overheat build hold the line. I found her more threatening when anchoring space, which made aggressive pushes feel riskier.

Reinhardt's Barrier Reconstruction, Feeling the Burn, and Dampener Grip were adjusted. The interaction between Feeling the Burn and effects that triggered off Rocket Hammer damage was removed because it was too strong. I missed the old combo, but I understood why it had to go.

Ana received buffs to Tactical Rifle, Dash Boots, and Cluster Core. Dash Boots went from 5% to 10% movement speed and its cooldown dropped from 4 seconds to 3 seconds. That made Ana feel much more agile in mid-range fights. Tactical Rifle's auto-aim was also refined to prioritize threats instead of locking onto allies, which was a common complaint.

Juno's Hyper Healer and Black Hole were buffed, with Hyper Ring getting a boost to compete with her other powers. Kiriko's Self-Care was also improved to provide more sustain in longer engagements.

Stadium Bug Fixes

Finally, Blizzard fixed two important Stadium bugs:

  • Fixed an issue where the direct hit of the Bola from Lille Fælde was doing more damage than intended.

  • Fixed an issue where the lingering damaging zone from So Cooked didn't apply effects that triggered from Ability Damage.

Those fixes mattered because Freja's bugs were making her feel even stronger than her kit suggested. In 2026, Stadium has evolved far beyond this patch, but I still look back at May 29, 2025 as a turning point. It was the moment Blizzard showed they were willing to listen, tune, and let every hero have a chance to shine.
